About Us

Twenty years. Two Founders. One way of working.

The Story

Unicorn Group started in 2006 the way most good things do — out of necessity, with very little, and slightly faster than was comfortable.

Ron Anderson had spent a decade in marketing and advertising before becoming State General Manager of a national events agency — working directly with senior executives from some of Australia's largest companies to reimagine what events could do for a business. Leah Anderson came from theatre and stage management before moving into the corporate world, where she built the programs and back-end architecture that powered some of Australia's largest reward and loyalty schemes.

When the agency they were working for collapsed, they did something most of their colleagues didn't. While everyone else updated their CVs and went looking for jobs, Ron and Leah looked at each other and backed themselves.

Within days, they sat down with the client they'd just rescued from the collapse and asked if they'd be willing to give a new business a chance. They said yes — not out of charity, but because they'd seen what Ron and Leah could do and didn't want to lose it.

What followed was one of the more unlikely success stories in Australian events. A single client relationship grew into one of the country's most respected business events agencies — trusted by blue-chip corporations, major franchise networks, government bodies, and organisations across the Asia-Pacific. They built and mentored teams, worked across the globe, helped shape the direction of businesses of every size, and formed friendships that have lasted decades.

The business has survived a global financial crisis, a pandemic, and everything else twenty years in business tends to throw at you.

Through all of it, one thing has stayed constant: the way they work.

The why comes before everything.

Before a single venue is considered. Before a budget is built. Before anything is designed. The first question is always: what is this event trying to achieve?

That question — and the discipline of not moving past it until it's properly answered — is what has defined Unicorn Group since the beginning. It's what has turned single briefs into decade-long partnerships. It's what has produced work that regularly wins recognition from an industry full of people who've seen everything.

The creative work is extraordinary because the thinking underneath it is rigorous. Leah's spatial and visual intelligence. Ron's strategic and human insight. Twenty years of doing this together, for clients who trust them to push back when something doesn't serve the outcome.

We question everything. We don't take shortcuts. We work for the outcome, not ourselves.

How we’ve always worked

The Founders

Ron Anderson - Co-Founder, Strategic Director

Ron has spent thirty years thinking about how people think — and using that understanding to design experiences that change behaviour, build culture, and move businesses forward.

He began in automotive marketing at Honda Australia, identifying and championing the CR-V's launch into the Australian market before it became Honda's best-selling model. He moved into advertising, rising to Group Account Director and relaunching Renault into Australia. In 2006 he co-founded Unicorn Group.

He has delivered events for 10 people and 5,000. He has curated Australia's presence at SXSW in Texas and convinced a Big 4 bank to rethink how they value their people. He speaks regularly at AIME and other event industry events, curated the SITE ANZ conference program in 2025, and has lectured in event management at tertiary level.

His sharpest skill is understanding what an audience needs to feel, and designing the experience that makes that happen.

Leah Anderson - Co-Founder, Creative Director

Leah Anderson has been producing experiences since before she knew that's what it was called.

She grew up performing — theatre, youth leadership, public speaking — before moving into stage management and working with the State Theatre Company of South Australia. She studied psychology at university, which gave her a framework for something she'd always done instinctively: reading people, understanding what they need to feel, and designing environments that make them feel it.

Her corporate events career started when she was headhunted mid-degree to help an agency through a busy period. She single-handedly built the data infrastructure behind Medibank's staff retention and client reward program, while contributing to other high-profile events.

In 2006, she co-founded Unicorn Group. Over the following two decades she has built and led creative teams, managed large-scale production logistics, developed quality control systems, and mentored producers across the industry. She and Ron spent two years in Bali — staging community events, renovating a house, and adopting a daughter — before returning to rebuild Unicorn's client portfolio and team from the ground up.

The decision to retrain formally in floristry and interior design came from frustration. Creative suppliers in many destinations weren't meeting the standard that Unicorn's briefs demanded. So she built the capability internally — and in doing so transformed not just the aesthetic quality of Unicorn's events, but the entire way the company approached experience design.

Her work is not about what looks good in a photograph. It's about what a space needs to feel like for the specific people who are going to be in it — connected to the brand, to each other, and to the place they're in.
